Dear Resident.

Unfortunately there have been Rogue Traders in the area of St Ives. An elderly lady has been duped into having some work done at her property by males who had knocked on her door. They stated that the lady needed work done on her roof. They replaced a few tiles and then said that further work needed to be done. These unscrupulous individuals have then taken the lady to the bank to withdraw a large amount of cash. Once bank staff realised what the lady needed the money for they have called Police. I am pleased to say that on this occasion, due to the quick thinking of the bank staff, no money was given to the so called tradespeople.
These males broke a number of Trading Standard laws firstly by failing to provide a contract and secondly by failing to give the 7 day cooling off period. The Trading Standards law states that you must be given a 7 day cooling off period for any work over £35.00.
My message is for everyone to be mindful of trade’s people just knocking on doors, I am not saying that all tradesmen that knock on your door or drop off a leaflet are out to con you but please ensure that all the rules and regulations are followed by these tradespeople. Can I also ask you to be the eyes and ears for any elderly and vulnerable friends and neighbours you have, as unfortunately these are the people that are usually targeted. If you believe something is wrong please obtain as much information as possible, descriptions of persons, description and index numbers or vehicles and any leaflets that they may have left and then ring us as soon as possible.
We are working very closely with our colleagues in Trading Standards to catch and prosecute the unscrupulous tradespeople that target the residents of Huntingdonshire. We need your help to catch and prosecute these people, as unfortunately this sort of crime is very under reported.
Never be afraid to say no and close the door.

If you think you may have witnessed anything to do with any crime or incident, then please contact us. You can e-mail us at or call police on 101. You can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. As always in an emergency call 999.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Kind regards
